Biography

Gildo de Freitas, artistic name of Leovegildo José de Freitas, was born in Porto Alegre in 1919 and established himself as one of the greatest icons of Rio Grande do Sul's regionalist music. Self-taught on the eight-bass accordion and famous for his remarkable ability to improvise, he gained popularity by animating dances and participating in high-audience radio programs, such as the show Grande Rodeio Coringa. Throughout his career, he released dozens of albums and built a striking partnership and good-humored rivalry with singer Teixeirinha, entertaining audiences throughout Brazil.

Recognized as "The King of Troubadours" and "The King of Improvisation", Gildo took the culture and traditions of Rio Grande do Sul to various states, recording highly successful albums with the Continental label and immortalizing trova classics. His simplicity, courage, and loyalty to his fans deeply marked his artistic trajectory, transforming him into a true legend of Rio Grande do Sul's songbook. Even after his passing in 1982, his legacy remains alive in Brazilian cultural memory and on the date established in his honor.
