Biography

Gino & Geno was a Brazilian sertanejo duo formed in 1970, hailing from Itapecerica, Minas Gerais. The original lineup consisted of Sebastião Ribeiro de Almeida (Gino) and Geraldo Alves dos Santos (Geno). Their music blended traditional sertanejo with elements of country, xote, and samba, characterized by humorous lyrics and danceable rhythms that resonated with audiences for decades. The duo's career began in the early 1970s, performing in local parties and festivals in Minas Gerais. Their breakthrough came in 1981 with the hit "As Águas do São Francisco," solidifying their place in the sertanejo scene. This song, co-written by Gino, Geno, and Otávio Pimentel, was later re-recorded and gained renewed popularity.

After facing challenges, the duo considered a hiatus, but were encouraged to return by singer Rick (of Rick & Renner) in 2000. This resurgence led to further success, with the release of albums and DVDs like "Gino & Geno Ao Vivo em São Bernardo do Campo." Their repertoire was known for its diversity, including popular songs such as "Fruta Proibida," "Eu Vou Beber Veneno," "Bebo Pra Carai," and "Coração Cigano." The duo's ability to combine different musical styles and inject humor into their songs influenced many subsequent artists in Brazilian country music.

In 2019, after nearly 50 years, Geraldo Alves dos Santos (Geno) retired, leading to the original formation's end and a subsequent legal dispute over the use of the duo's name. Gino continued the career with a new partner, aiming to preserve the musical essence of Gino & Geno. Despite the separation of the original members, the duo's legacy in Brazilian sertanejo music remains significant, marked by their longevity, adaptability, and enduring popularity.
