Biography

Glauber Rocha was a seminal Brazilian filmmaker, writer, actor, and political activist who became the leading figure of the Cinema Novo movement during the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, he emerged as a revolutionary genius whose groundbreaking works challenged conventional aesthetics and offered fierce social critique, radically breaking away from imported Hollywood styles. His iconic masterpieces, such as Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol, Terra em Transe, and O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro, remain foundational pillars of Brazilian cinema.

Facing severe political persecution by the military dictatorship, Rocha spent several years in self-imposed exile across Latin America, the United States, and Europe before returning to Brazil in 1976. Throughout his turbulent career, he maintained profound connections with other cultural luminaries, including artists and writers like Jorge Amado, and collaborated closely with figures such as Helena Ignez.
