Biography
Golpe de Estado is a Brazilian hard rock band formed in São Paulo in late 1985, originally conceived by bassist Nélson Brito and drummer Paulo Zinner. The group soon solidified with the addition of guitarist Hélcio Aguirra and vocalist Catalau, building a solid reputation in the São Paulo underground scene and releasing their self-titled debut album in 1986 through the Baratos Afins label.
Over the following decades, the band remained active and released several notable works, such as the albums Forçando a Barra and Nem Polícia nem Bandido, even opening shows for major international rock acts like Jethro Tull, Nazareth, and Deep Purple. The group also collaborated with important icons of national music, featuring contributions from artists such as Arnaldo Antunes, Branco Mello, Rita Lee, and Dinho Ouro Preto on their recording projects.
The trajectory of Golpe de Estado was marked by some hiatuses, lineup changes, and felt losses, such as the passing of founding guitarist Hélcio Aguirra in 2014. Even after announcing a brief end to their activities in 2015, the band returned to the stage and studios, celebrating three decades of their career with the DVD Ao Vivo 30 Anos and releasing the studio album Caosmópolis in 2022, reaffirming their historical importance in Brazilian heavy rock alongside names like Titãs and Sepultura.
