Biography

Grinders is a Brazilian skate punk band formed in the ABC region of São Paulo in 1984. The band emerged from the fusion of two local groups, Inimigos da Ordem and Holocausto, and is widely recognized as Brazil's first skate punk band. Their sound is heavily influenced by the Californian hardcore scene of the 1980s, drawing inspiration from bands such as Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Agent Orange, and Dead Kennedys. The band's name itself, suggested by friend and entrepreneur Jorge Kuge (owner of the Urgh! brand), is derived from a skateboarding trick, reflecting the integral connection between the band's identity and skate culture.

Grinders made their debut on the influential 1985 compilation "Ataque Sonoro," which featured other notable punk bands of the era like Lobotomia, Ratos de Porão, Armagedom, and Garotos Podres. This compilation included some of Grinders' early classics, such as "Skate Gralha" and "Como é que pode?" The song "Skate Gralha" became an anthem in skate parks across Brazil, resonating with generations and solidifying the band's status within the skate community. In 1987, Grinders released their self-titled debut album, produced by Redson Pozzi of Cólera, which is considered a landmark in Brazilian underground music and a definitive reference for skate punk in the country.

The band's lyrical themes often revolve around everyday life, particularly the experiences and culture of skateboarding. Their fast-paced, aggressive punk rock sound, combined with their authentic connection to the skate scene, allowed Grinders to become officially adopted by skateboarders in Brazil. Over the decades, Grinders has continued to be an active force in the Brazilian punk scene, performing and releasing music, celebrating their legacy as pioneers of skate punk in Brazil.
