Biography

Grupo Luni is a Brazilian musical ensemble formed in São Paulo in 1986, bringing together artists from diverse backgrounds such as theater, literature, visual arts, and music. The original lineup featured prominent members like Marisa Orth, Natália Barros, Théo Wernek, André Gordon, Fernando Figueiredo, Kuki Stolarky, Lelena Anhaia, alongside French duo Gilles Eduar and Lloyd Bonnemaison. They quickly gained recognition for their avant-garde multimedia performances, striking visuals, and bold musical style during the Brazilian rock boom of the 1980s.

The group debuted at the legendary Madame Satã in São Paulo and toured extensively across Brazil before releasing their self-titled debut album in 1988. The record spawned notable hits such as "The Best", "Taxi", and "Johnny", while their track "Rap do Rei" served as the opening theme for the telenovela Que Rei Sou Eu?. Though the band dissolved in 1992 as members pursued distinct career paths, they later reunited for special revival tours and recording projects involving collaborators like Rita Lee and Hugo Casarini.

Throughout their history, Grupo Luni maintained a distinctive approach that blended performance art, dance, and circus elements into their concerts. Contemporaries of acts like Os Mulheres Negras, the band left a lasting imprint on the Brazilian alternative scene through their creative freedom and eclectic aesthetic. Their legacy was further cemented by reissues of their classic material and occasional reunion performances featuring core members.
