Biography
The Grupo Voz do Sertão was a vocal and instrumental ensemble formed in 1927 by mandolin player Luperce Miranda. The group also featured embolada singer and composer Minona Carneiro, guitarist Meira, and cavaquinho player José Ferreira. They were active for a brief period, recording their first record for Odeon in 1928, which included the fox trot "Primoroso" and the waltz-choro "Lindete," both by Luperce Miranda.
In the same year, they recorded several other songs, including the emboladas "Xou, juriti" and "Ai, Maria," and the choro "Cavaquinho de ouro," all authored by Luperce Miranda and Minona Carneiro. They also recorded the march "Lúcia," by Luperce Miranda. Despite their prolific recording output in 1928, the group disbanded shortly thereafter.
The legacy of Grupo Voz do Sertão lies in their contribution to the early popular music scene in Brazil, particularly in popularizing Northeastern rhythms like embolada and choro. Their work paved the way for future artists exploring similar genres, showcasing the rich diversity of Brazilian musical traditions.
