Biography

Guilherme Coutinho Jorge was a prominent Brazilian arranger, singer, composer, and pianist born in Belém, Pará. He began playing the piano at the tender age of five and joined amateur groups such as Os Mocorongos and Os Iguanos as a teenager before establishing himself as a bandleader. Throughout his career, he performed in numerous local venues and notably spent over fifteen years as a resident act at the Assembleia Paraense, performing for high society with his preferred lineup of piano, bass, and drums.

As a central figure in the vibrant club scene of Belém during the 1970s, Coutinho regularly led large ensembles during Carnival and actively supported local composers. His musical reach extended to serving as the musical director for the debut professional concert of Leila Pinheiro at the historic Theatro da Paz. Over the course of his career, he released notable albums including Guilherme Coutinho e a Curtição, Procura-se, and Guilherme Coutinho e o Grupo Stalo.

Coutinho's life was tragically cut short when he suffered a fatal heart attack on August 20, 1983, just hours after his final performances at the Projeto Pixinguinha at Theatro da Paz and the Gemini Blues nightclub. His legacy as a pioneer of Pará's musical landscape remains influential, bridging popular and club sounds alongside collaborators like Walter Bandeira. His contributions continue to be celebrated through reissues and tributes to his enduring artistry within Brazilian music.
