Biography

Guilherme Kastrup is a prominent Brazilian percussionist, instrumentalist, and record producer born in Rio de Janeiro. He began his formal music studies at the Conservatorio Villa-Lobos in 1985 and later pursued a bachelor's degree in percussion at Universidade Estacio de Sa. Influenced early on by rock, jazz, and the instrumental artistry of masters like Naná Vasconselos and Hermeto Pascoal, Kastrup eventually moved to Sao Paulo to deepen his research into traditional Brazilian rhythms such as jongo, congado, and moçambique.

Throughout his career, Kastrup pioneered the use of hybrid drum-and-percussion sets known as percuterias, integrating electronic technology and acoustic engineering into his work. As a producer and studio owner, he has helmed critically acclaimed and award-winning albums, most notably Elza Soares's landmark release A Mulher do Fim do Mundo. He has also collaborated extensively as a live and studio musician with celebrated Brazilian artists including Chico Cesar, Arnaldo Antunes, Tom Zé, and Zeca Baleiro.

In addition to his collaborative production work, Kastrup has released solo material, debuting with his 2013 album Kastrupismo followed by Sons de Sobrevivência and Ponto de Mutação. He is widely recognized as a key figure in the contemporary vanguard of Sao Paulo's music scene, helping bridge traditional Brazilian roots with modern sonic experimentation.
