Biography

Hans-Joachim Koellreutter was a German-born Brazilian composer, musicologist, and influential music educator. Having fled Nazi persecution due to his engagement with a Jewish woman and his opposition to the regime, he arrived in Brazil in 1937 and quickly established himself as a central figure in the modernization of Brazilian classical music. He fostered friendships with prominent figures such as Heitor Villa-Lobos and Mário de Andrade, helping to shape the future of the nation's artistic landscape.

Throughout his illustrious career, Koellreutter founded the pioneering Música Viva group and co-founded the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, alongside serving as a fundamental mentor to generations of renowned musicians. His progressive pedagogy rejected absolute values and rigid rules, influencing legendary artists across both erudite and popular traditions, including Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and Cláudio Santoro. His innovative musical style incorporated European serialism, electronic technology, and microtonal elements discovered during his travels in India.

Koellreutter passed away in São Paulo in 2005, leaving behind an invaluable legacy preserved at the Federal University of São João del Rei. His pedagogical methods and aesthetic philosophies continue to resonate deeply within Brazilian music education and contemporary composition. He remains remembered as a revolutionary teacher who taught students to question convention and seek their own artistic identities.
