Biography

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a Brazilian conductor, composer, pianist, cellist, and classical guitarist, widely recognized as the most important exponent of classical music in 20th-century Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro on March 5, 1887, Villa-Lobos demonstrated early musical talent, learning to play the guitar from his father and, later, the cello and piano. His musical training was marked by a strong popular influence, having lived with chorões and explored the sounds of Brazil's interior on his travels. This experience with Brazilian culture, combined with the study of classical European composers like Bach, allowed him to develop a unique musical language that fused the erudite with the folkloric and popular.

Villa-Lobos is the author of more than two thousand works, making him one of the most prolific composers in history. His vast production encompasses concertos, symphonies, chamber music, operas, ballets, film scores, and pieces for solo instruments, with an emphasis on the guitar and piano. Among his most celebrated compositions are the "Bachianas Brasileiras", a series of nine suites that explore the fusion between Bach's music and Brazilian rhythms, and "O Trenzinho do Caipira" (The Little Train of the Caipira), which mimics the sound of a locomotive. His "Choros" series is also a milestone, featuring 14 pieces that celebrate Brazilian musical diversity.

In addition to his career as a composer and conductor, Villa-Lobos played a fundamental role in music education in Brazil. He reorganized music teaching in public schools, creating the National Conservatory of Orpheonic Singing in 1942. His dedication to promoting Brazilian music led him to undertake international tours, presenting his works on important stages around the world. Heitor Villa-Lobos passed away in Rio de Janeiro on November 17, 1959, leaving an invaluable musical legacy that continues to influence generations of musicians and represent Brazil's sound identity.
