Biography

Hélio dos Santos Lima, widely known as Helinho, was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 11, 1955. He began his football journey at the tender age of 10 with Portuguesa Carioca, progressing through their youth ranks until 1974. His refined technique and unique midfield creativity quickly drew the attention of Brazil's top clubs.

In 1975, Helinho joined Vasco da Gama, where he played until 1979, accumulating 217 appearances and scoring 11 goals. He played a significant role in Vasco's 1976 Taça Guanabara victory and was a key player in their 1977 Campeonato Carioca triumph. Despite playing alongside established stars, Helinho secured a starting position, notably scoring three consecutive goals in different matches and being instrumental in a dramatic penalty shootout final against Flamengo.

After a brief stint with Sporting in Portugal during the 1979-80 season, Helinho returned to Brazil in 1980, finding renewed success with Bahia. There, he became a four-time state champion, forming a formidable midfield alongside players like Léo Oliveira. Helinho's career is remembered for his dedication, talent, and passion for football, leaving a significant mark on Brazilian football in the 1970s and 1980s.
