Biography

Hélio Alves is an acclaimed Brazilian jazz pianist, born in São Paulo on October 5, 1966. The son of pianists, he began his musical studies on the piano at six years of age. In his adolescence, his passion for jazz led him to form a band with friends, exploring the chords and improvisations that would define his career. His musical training was refined at the Berklee College of Music, in Boston, where he graduated in 1990, before moving to New York, becoming a prominent figure in the international jazz scene.

Throughout his career, Hélio Alves has collaborated with a vast array of renowned artists, both from Brazil and abroad. He worked for many years with trumpeter Cláudio Roditi, recording albums such as "Samba Manhattan Style" and "Double Standards". His partnership with saxophonist Joe Henderson resulted in memorable recordings, including the CD "Joe Henderson Big Band", which was awarded a Grammy. Alves has also lent his talent to projects by Yo-Yo Ma, Paquito D'Rivera, Rosa Passos, Duduka da Fonseca, Airto Moreira, Joyce Moreno, and Maucha Adnet, among many others, demonstrating his versatility and deep musical knowledge.

Recognized for his technical ability and interpretive sensitivity, Hélio Alves is celebrated for his capacity to fuse Brazilian rhythms with the energy of contemporary jazz. His music is described as an intricate and sensual blend, executed with the precision of a classical musician and the energy of a street jazz artist. He is considered one of the leading Brazilian jazz pianists of his generation, with a discography that includes acclaimed albums such as "Musica" and "Portrait in Black and White", consolidating his place as a standout artist in Brazilian and international instrumental music.
