Biography
Hélio Cabral was a Brazilian composer born in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, in 1926. His musical career began with his participation in the Cartolinhas de Caxias samba school, which later became Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, where he was champion on several occasions. In 1960, Hélio Cabral joined the Composers Wing of Mangueira, one of Rio de Janeiro's most traditional samba schools. In addition to his work in carnival, he was also a civil servant at the Navy Arsenal, where he retired.
Before standing out in Mangueira, Hélio Cabral had already achieved success with the samba "Acordem benfeitores do universo", which was later re-recorded by Martinho da Vila. In Mangueira, his compositions "Semente do samba" and "Mangueira faz hoje o sambista de amanhã" became major hits. In 2000, the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro released a double CD in tribute to Mangueira's composers, which included the recording of "Boêmio fracassado", one of his compositions.
Hélio Cabral passed away in 1997, in Rio de Janeiro. His work, especially in the universe of samba and samba schools, left an important legacy. He is remembered as a composer who contributed significantly to Brazilian popular music, with his songs portraying the soul and culture of samba.
