Biography

Herman Torres Filho, better known as Mani, is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist born in Maceió on January 15, 1954. Raised between Alagoas and Rio de Janeiro, he immersed himself in the rock scene and began his professional trajectory playing bass for artist Fagner in the 1970s. Over the decades, he established himself as a prolific composer and musician, collaborating with prominent figures of MPB such as Alceu Valença, Amelinha, Ney Matogrosso, and Zizi Possi, for whom he co-wrote the major hit “Caminhos de Sol”.

In the 1980s, Torres became part of the iconic new wave band Gang 90 & As Absurdettes, contributing guitar, bass, and vocals during the peak of Brazilian national rock. With the group, he participated in hit records and television soundtracks, including the soap opera theme “Nosso Louco Amor”. He later formed the band Cadillac and pursued solo projects, releasing albums that showcased his multifaceted talents as a performer, arranger, and musical director.

His compositions have left an indelible mark on Brazilian popular music, featured on numerous successful albums and soap opera soundtracks that defined generations. Despite operating largely behind the scenes as a songwriter and instrumentalist rather than seeking mainstream celebrity, Herman Torres remains a respected figure in Brazilian musical history. His extensive body of work connects the worlds of northeastern regional music, rock, and sophisticated MPB.
