Biography
Hermelino Neder is a Brazilian composer, arranger, and music educator, deeply connected to the Vanguarda Paulista movement of the 1980s. He studied at the School of Communications and Arts at USP and holds a doctorate in Communication and Semiotics from PUC-SP. Neder's career began to gain traction in the 1980s when he formed the group Hermelino e a Football Music, which released the cult album "Como Essa Mulher" in 1984. This album is noted for its innovative blend of popular and avant-garde classical music, incorporating orchestral instruments alongside traditional popular music elements. His work in this period placed him alongside other prominent figures of the Vanguarda Paulista, such as Itamar Assumpção and Arrigo Barnabé.
Beyond his work with Hermelino e a Football Music, Neder has established a significant career as a composer of film scores. He has created soundtracks for films including "Perfume de Gardênia," "A Hora Mágica," "Onde Andará Dulce Veiga?," and "A Dama do Cine Shanghai," for which he received the award for best soundtrack at the Gramado Festival. His compositions have also been interpreted by notable Brazilian artists like Arrigo Barnabé, Suzana Salles, and Cássia Eller, further cementing his influence within the Brazilian music scene. Neder's artistic output is characterized by its existential themes, often delivered with a blend of poignancy and humor, and arranged in his distinctive authorial style.
After dedicating three decades to music education, where he held positions at institutions like Escola Vera Cruz and St. Nicholas School, Neder has returned to the forefront of artistic performance. He has collaborated with artists such as Arrigo Barnabé, Augusto de Campos, and Luiz Tatit, and his music has been featured in dance performances, including a choreography by the São Paulo Dance Company based on his piece "Undiu Dois." In 2013, Arrigo Barnabé premiered a show dedicated entirely to Neder's compositions. Neder's ongoing engagement with music, both as a performer and composer, continues to enrich Brazilian music with his unique artistic vision.
