Biography

Hianto de Almeida was a distinguished Brazilian singer, songwriter, and a notable precursor of the Bossa Nova movement. Born in Macau, Rio Grande do Norte, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1952, where he quickly immersed himself in the vibrant musical scene and began recording his compositions with prominent artists of the era. His unique harmonic and rhythmic structures predated and deeply influenced the foundational sound of bossa nova, earning praise from cultural figures such as Chico Anysio and Tom Jobim.

Throughout his tragically short career of just four decades, Almeida produced over two hundred compositions, recording with iconic performers like Elizeth Cardoso, Elza Soares, Cauby Peixoto, and João Gilberto, who famously recorded his samba-canção "Meia luz". He frequently collaborated with notable lyricists and musicians, including Francisco Anysio and his brother Haroldo de Almeida, leaving behind a rich legacy in samba-canção and early bossa nova. His enduring influence continues to be celebrated by music historians and legendary bossa nova artists alike.
