Biography

Humberto Cavalcanti Teixeira was a prominent Brazilian composer, lawyer, and politician, widely celebrated for his monumental partnership with Luiz Gonzaga. Born in Iguatu, Ceará, he displayed an early aptitude for music, mastering instruments such as the French musette, flute, and mandolin during his youth. After moving to Rio de Janeiro in his teens, he pursued a legal education while establishing himself as a talented songwriter, eventually graduating in Law from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1945, Teixeira met Luiz Gonzaga, an encounter that would forever alter the landscape of Brazilian popular music. Together, they popularized northeastern rhythms on a national and international scale, most notably creating the iconic 1947 masterpiece "Asa Branca". Their collaboration defined the baião genre and brought widespread attention to the cultural sounds of Brazil's sertão. Beyond his work with Gonzaga, Teixeira composed enduring songs with other legendary artists such as Sivuca, leaving behind a rich legacy of musical innovation.

In addition to his artistic contributions, Teixeira entered politics and was elected federal deputy in 1954, using his platform to champion copyright protection and promote Brazilian music abroad through pioneering legislation. He was recognized as one of Brazil's finest composers and represented the country internationally at congresses for authors and composers. Teixeira passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 1979, leaving a lasting cultural imprint commemorated through various monuments, biographies, and documentaries.
