Biography

Ian Guest, whose birth name was János Geszti, was born in Budapest, Hungary, on May 23, 1940. He arrived in Brazil with his family in 1956, fleeing the revolution in his native country. In Rio de Janeiro, he socialized with important figures of bossa nova, such as Luizinho Eça and Sergio Mendes, and refined his studies in classical music through his experience with Brazilian music. He graduated in composition from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Berklee College of Music in the United States.

His professional career began as a sound engineer at Odeon records in the 1960s, working in mastering. During this decade, he moved between bossa nova and Jovem Guarda, even using the pseudonym "Atila" for some compositions. He partnered with lyricists like Vinicius de Moraes, with whom he composed "Tempo de Solidão" and "Pergunte a Você", and also collaborated with Milton Banana and Raul Seixas, for whom he wrote "Ainda é Hora de Chorar".

Guest was a pioneer in teaching methods applied to popular music in Brazil, introducing the Kodály Method and founding the Ian Guest Center for Musical Improvement (Cigam) in 1987. He taught several renowned musicians, such as Raphael Rabello, Almir Chediak, Zélia Duncan, and Leila Pinheiro. He published books on harmony and arrangement that became references for students and professionals. Ian Guest passed away in Tiradentes, Minas Gerais, on April 23, 2022, leaving an invaluable legacy for Brazilian music.
