Biography
Instituto is a Brazilian collective and production project formed in São Paulo in the early 2000s. It is not strictly a band but rather a fluid entity comprising producers, musicians, and artists from diverse musical backgrounds. The core members and producers behind Instituto include Rica Amabis, Tejo Damasceno, and Daniel Ganjaman, with Rodrigo Silveira also being part of the initial lineup.
Instituto's work is characterized by its innovative fusion of various Brazilian musical genres with electronic, hip-hop, and dub influences. Their debut album, "Coleção Nacional" (2002), exemplifies this approach, featuring collaborations with a wide array of artists such as Sabotage, Rappin' Hood, Nação Zumbi, BNegão, and Otto. This project aimed to blur the lines between producer, DJ, and artist, creating a unique sonic landscape that reflected the contemporary Brazilian music scene.
The collective's second album, "Violar" (2015), released after a significant hiatus, continued this tradition of collaboration, bringing together new and established artists like Criolo, Tulipa Ruiz, Karol Conka, and Metá Metá, alongside returning collaborators. Instituto's approach has been instrumental in shaping the sound of 21st-century Brazilian pop, bridging genres like rap, rock, Northeastern music, black music, electronic, and instrumental music.
