Biography

Joviniano José Velloso Barrêtto, known professionally as J. Velloso, is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, producer, and cultural activist. Born in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia, he later moved to Salvador, where he became involved in capoeira and football before pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine. His artistic journey began in the early 1980s, with his first songs emerging from his interactions with local artists in Santo Amaro. His career gained momentum after he returned to Salvador, leading to his compositions being recorded by some of Brazil's most celebrated musicians.

Velloso's extensive work as a songwriter has seen his lyrics interpreted by a diverse range of artists, including Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Daniela Mercury, and Beth Carvalho, among many others. Beyond his work as a performer and composer, he has also made significant contributions as a music producer, helming acclaimed albums such as Batatinha's "Diplomacia" (which won a Prêmio Sharp), Riachão's "Humanenochum" (nominated for a Grammy), and Mariene de Castro's "Abre Caminho" (winner of a Prêmio Tim de Música). His own discography includes albums like "Aboio para um Rinoceronte" (2004), "J. Velloso e os Cavaleiros de Jorge" (2009), and "Não Sei de te Contei" (2018), as well as the book-CD "Santo Antônio e outros Cantos" (2010).
