Biography
Jackson Antunes, stage name of Joaquim Antunes, was born in Janaúba, Minas Gerais, on August 28, 1960. Before consolidating his artistic career, he worked various jobs in his childhood and youth, such as a shoeshine boy, baker, and sign painter, in addition to having strong contact with the popular traditions of northern Minas Gerais, such as the Folias de Reis. His interest in the performing arts and music manifested early on, leading him to work in the circus and amateur theater before moving to Belo Horizonte and turning professional on stage.
On television, he debuted with great prominence in the soap opera Renascer, in 1993, playing the striking character Damião, a role that earned him prestigious awards such as the Troféu Imprensa and the APCA Award. Over the years, he became a constant presence in rural and historical-themed productions, participating in high-ratings soap operas alongside renowned actors, consolidating a dramatic versatility that also extended to film.
Alongside his acting career, Jackson Antunes built a solid trajectory as a singer and songwriter dedicated to roots sertaneja music and the caipira viola. He released several albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, paying homage to important names in traditional Brazilian culture and recording repertoires in partnership with artists like Chico Lobo and Téo Azevedo. His musical work dialogues directly with the matrices of the popular songbook of Brazil's interior, reinforcing his identity as an authentic rural singer.
