Biography
Jairo Pereira is a multifaceted Brazilian artist, recognized as an actor, singer, composer, director, writer, and poet. He began writing poetry at the age of 13 and embarked on his artistic career as a singer in 1994. Pereira is also known as an "artivist," exploring efficient forms of communication in the fight against oppression. His work often addresses social issues such as injustice, religious intolerance, racism, and inclusion, alongside themes of love and contemporary relationships. His musical style is a fusion of Rap, MPB, black music, and spoken word.
He was a co-founder and vocalist of the São Paulo-based big band Aláfia, with whom he released several albums, including "Aláfia" (2013), "Corpura" (2015), "SP não é sopa" (2017), and "Liturgia Samba Soul" (2019). In parallel to his work with Aláfia, Pereira launched his solo career in 2015, initially sharing his poetry recitations online. This led to the creation of his solo poetry project, "Mutum," which resulted in his first solo album of the same name in 2017. His subsequent solo albums include "Venha Ver o Sol" (2019) and "Monocromático" (2022), the latter being an audiovisual album.
Pereira's artistic journey was significantly influenced by his upbringing, surrounded by diverse musical genres and encouraged by his mother to write poetry. A pivotal moment came in his early teens when he discovered rap music, particularly the group Racionais MC's, which inspired him to use rap and poetry as powerful tools for self-expression and social commentary. He has performed in prominent venues in São Paulo and at various festivals, sharing his "artivist" message through provocative and engaging shows.
