Biography

The Jambo Trio is a Brazilian instrumental group formed in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, in 2019. The trio's sound is deeply rooted in the classic samba-jazz trios of the 1950s and 1960s, blending elements of North American jazz, samba, Latin jazz, and bossa nova. Their repertoire features original compositions alongside works by influential composers in the genre, such as Baden Powell, Moacir Santos, César Camargo Mariano, J. Meirelles, and João Donato.

The ensemble maintains a traditional jazz piano trio formation, consisting of piano, double bass, and drums. The current members are Luis Henrique New on piano, Everson Vargas on double bass, and Ricardo Arenhaldt on drums. All members possess academic musical training and also work as music educators. The musicians have gathered diverse professional experiences from various parts of the world, including Japan, Europe, Latin America, and North Africa, contributing to the trio's unique musical language and distinct sound identity.

The Jambo Trio has been increasingly recognized within the Brazilian music scene, participating in jazz festivals and instrumental music events. In 2023, they performed at the International Jazz Day and the Poa Jazz Festival. Their work is seen as a continuation of the legacy of samba-jazz trios that laid the foundation for many artists in bossa nova and MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), solidifying their place as a significant act in Brazil's instrumental music landscape.
