Biography

Jamelão, born José Bispo Clementino dos Santos in Rio de Janeiro, was one of the most iconic and traditional voices in the history of Brazilian samba. Growing up in the neighborhoods of São Cristóvão and Engenho Novo, he began his musical journey playing the tambourine in the bateria of the Estação Primeira de Mangueira, a samba school that would define his entire career. Over the decades, he rose to become the school's primary and most revered lead interpreter, leading its carnival parades from 1949 until 2006.

Beyond his legendary status in the carnival context, Jamelão established a prolific recording career with major labels like Odeon, Philips, and Continental, releasing numerous classic albums and memorable singles. His deep, powerful voice brought timeless sambas and sambas-enredo to life, earning him widespread acclaim and numerous accolades, including multiple Estandarte de Ouro awards and the prestigious Ordem do Mérito Cultural. Throughout his artistic path, he crossed paths and shared the cultural landscape with notable figures of Brazilian music such as Cartola, Xangô da Mangueira, and Francisco Alves.

Jamelão remained deeply dedicated to his art and to Mangueira well into his later years, becoming a living monument of Brazilian traditional culture. Even as health challenges slowed his public appearances in his final years, his legacy as the quintessential voice of the morro remained untouched. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 95, leaving behind an indelible mark on Brazilian popular music and continuing to be celebrated as a true pillar of samba.
