Biography
Jarbas Mariz is a renowned Brazilian instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter, born in Aimorés and raised in João Pessoa, with family roots in Sousa. Since childhood, he showed a great interest in music, nourishing himself on the sounds of Bossa Nova and the great names of Jovem Guarda. In his adolescence and youth, he joined local dance bands like Pedras Rolantes and Os Selenitas, which opened doors for him to collaborate with fundamental artists of Northeastern and experimental music, including Zé Ramalho, with whom he participated in the emblematic album Paêbirú.
Throughout his career, Jarbas expanded his work to different regions of the country, recording his first original work, Transas do Futuro, in Belém do Pará, and later joining Cátia de França's band, a partnership that led him to travel frequently to Rio de Janeiro. During this Rio phase, he had the opportunity to live and play alongside great icons of popular culture and MPB, such as Jackson do Pandeiro and Marinês, consolidating his instrumental versatility between the Northeast and Southeast.
Settling in São Paulo starting in the late 1980s, Jarbas Mariz stood out in projects of great artistic relevance, being selected for performances with musical direction by Tom Zé. This partnership deepened and extended internationally when Tom Zé regained global prominence, making Jarbas a fixed and essential member of the acclaimed Tropicália composer's band over decades of touring and recording.
