Biography

Jayme Thomás Florence, better known as Meira, was born in Paudalho, Pernambuco, in 1909, and established himself as one of the great guitarists and composers of Brazilian instrumental music. In his youth, he moved to Recife, where he joined the ensemble Voz do Sertão, led by Luperce Miranda, before settling in Rio de Janeiro and becoming part of Benedito Lacerda's famous regional group.

Although he did not release an album of his own throughout his career, his importance as a composer left a mark on the discography of major names in MPB and samba, with recordings interpreted by artists such as Elizeth Cardoso, Nana Caymmi, Orlando Silva, and Luiz Gonzaga. His instrumental work had a deep dialogue with choro, highlighted by partnerships and recordings alongside Dilermando Reis on 78 rpm records.

In addition to his work as an instrumentalist, Meira left a formidable legacy as a guitar teacher, influencing generations of fundamental musicians such as Baden Powell and Raphael Rabello. His unique methodology combined the rigor of classical literature with the practical experience of choro jam sessions, passing on his vast harmonic knowledge by ear and without the use of sheet music.
