Biography

João Dionísio Santana, also known by his stage names J. Santana and João Folião, is a Brazilian musician born in Nova Soure, Bahia, on January 1, 1947. He is a guitarist and composer, with his work primarily in the genres of samba, pagode, and regional music.

Santana's musical career gained momentum in 1974 when he moved to Rio de Janeiro. With guidance from businessman João Bosco, he began performing on the "Programa Adelzon Alves" on Rádio Globo. He was a member of the regional group Trio Pajeú, alongside Paraná Queirós and Domingos José. The trio released their first LP in 1974, featuring songs like "Hoje tem pagode" and "Mocinhas da cidade." Their subsequent album, "A festa continua," released the following year, included "Dança do xenhenhém," co-written by Santana and Paraná Queirós.

Beyond his work with Trio Pajeú, João Dionísio Santana is also recognized as a composer. His compositions, often in collaboration with other artists, explore various Brazilian rhythms, contributing to the nation's rich popular music landscape. His grandfather was the flutist and pianist João Dionísio Santana, who hosted musical gatherings attended by notable Brazilian musicians.
