João Lopes was a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician born in Califórnia, Paraná. He began his professional music career in the late 1970s after receiving an invitation from Ivo Rodrigues, the leader of the famous Curitiba-based rock band Blindagem. His self-titled debut album was released in 1981 and featured his most celebrated track, "Bicho do Paraná," which grew to become an unofficial anthem for the state of Paraná and was later recognized as an official cultural heritage symbol.

Throughout his career, João Lopes released several notable albums, including Pé Vermelho, O Homem e a Natureza, and Interiores, establishing himself as a foundational figure in regional Brazilian rock. His signature track gained widespread national recognition when it was selected as the soundtrack for a major advertising campaign by Banco Bamerindus in the 1980s. His contributions to Brazilian music and regional culture earned him prestigious honors such as the Order of the Pine Tree and honorary citizenship of Curitiba.

The artist passed away in Curitiba in 2020 at the age of 69, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the southern Brazilian rock scene. His work continues to be celebrated for its deep connection to the identity and pride of the people of Paraná. He remains an essential reference for regional rock music alongside contemporaries from the local scene.
