Biography

João Palma was a highly respected Brazilian drummer, often regarded as one of the best in his field within the country. His career began in 1960, and he quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the Brazilian music scene. Palma was known for his versatility, excelling in both jazz and popular Brazilian music (MPB).

Throughout his extensive career, Palma collaborated with a vast array of both Brazilian and international artists. He was a key member of Roberto Menescal's ensemble early in his career and later performed with legends such as Egberto Gismonti, Dori Caymmi, Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Sergio Mendes, and Astrud Gilberto. His international collaborations included working with renowned artists like Frank Sinatra, Paul Desmond, and Stanley Turrentine, showcasing his global appeal and talent.

Palma's musical journey also saw him move to the United States in the mid-1960s, where he continued to build an impressive discography and reputation. He was recognized not only for his technical skill but also for his subtle approach to drumming, drawing comparisons to esteemed jazz drummers. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, leaving behind a rich legacy as a master percussionist who significantly contributed to the sounds of Brazilian music.
