Biography

João Paulo, stage name of José Henrique dos Reis, was an acclaimed Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician born in Brotas, São Paulo. Before achieving national acclaim, the artist had a humble childhood working as a bricklayer and carpenter, in addition to being part of an early musical lineup with his brother. The turning point in his career occurred when he joined forces with singer Daniel, forming the famous sertanejo duo João Paulo & Daniel, which began performing in the 1980s and released albums such as Amor Sempre Amor.

The duo reached the height of success in the 1990s, especially after the release of their seventh career volume, which featured the major hit "Estou Apaixonado", a cover of a song by Donato & Estefano that was part of the soundtrack for the telenovela Explode Coração. This recognition solidified the duo among the biggest names in Brazilian sertanejo music alongside peers such as Chitãozinho & Xororó, Leandro & Leonardo, and Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano, overcoming and defeating the barriers and prejudices of the era in the recording industry.

João Paulo's career and life were tragically cut short in September 1997, when he died in a car accident on the Rodovia dos Bandeirantes, causing immense grief throughout the country and bringing an end to the duo's activities. After his death, his legacy lived on through tributes paid by his former partner Daniel, his daughter Jéssica dos Reis, and various prominent figures of sertanejo music who permanently praised his cultural significance.
