Biography

Dom João Resende Costa was a prominent Brazilian Roman Catholic bishop and a member of the Salesian congregation.

Born in Borda da Mata, Minas Gerais, on October 19, 1910, he dedicated his life to the church, undertaking his theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1935 and later earned a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology. His early career included leadership roles in Salesian educational institutions in Brazil, such as director of the Heart of Jesus High School and rector of the Seminary of Theology in São Paulo.

In 1953, he was appointed Bishop of Ilhéus, Bahia, where he served until 1957. During his tenure, he promoted vocations, expanded the diocesan seminary, and oversaw the completion of the cathedral. He was then appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, and later became the second Archbishop of the archdiocese in 1967, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. He was an attendee at the Second Vatican Council and played a significant role in implementing its teachings within the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, establishing numerous parishes and religious communities.
