Biography

João Roberto Esteves Kelly is a Brazilian pianist, composer, and music producer born in Rio de Janeiro on June 24, 1938. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, he began learning the piano at an early age under the guidance of his mother and grandmother before studying at the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música. Although he initially earned a law degree from the Faculdade de Direito do Rio de Janeiro, his true passion for music led him to collaborate with notable cultural figures and write revues, theater pieces, and television soundtracks, frequently working alongside artists such as Elza Soares, Elizeth Cardoso, and Chico Anísio.

Throughout his prolific career, Kelly became a prominent fixture in Brazilian television and carnival culture, creating and hosting musical programs like "Musikelly" and "Rio dá samba" on networks such as TV Rio, TV Excelsior, and TV Globo. He composed numerous celebrated carnival marches and popular songs, including massive hits like "Cabeleira do Zezé" and "Boato," which were famously interpreted by legendary performers like Jorge Goulart and Emilinha Borba. His contributions cemented his legacy as a central chronicler of Rio de Janeiro's musical identity and festive traditions.
