Biography

Joao Cerqueira de Santana Filho, known professionally as Joao Santana, is a Brazilian journalist, writer, political strategist, and musician born in Tucano on January 5, 1953. Alongside his prominent career in political marketing and journalism—where he won the prestigious Premio Esso for reporting—he maintained a significant presence in the Brazilian musical scene. During the 1970s and 1980s, he served as the main composer and lyricist for the rock band Bendegó, releasing multiple LPs and collaborating with legendary figures of Brazilian music such as Caetano Veloso.

Throughout his artistic trajectory, Santana expanded his musical footprint by partnering with notable artists like Moraes Moreira, while having his compositions recorded by prominent interpreters such as Diana Pequeno and Pepeu Gomes. His deep connection to the country's cultural movements also saw him working alongside intellectuals and musicians like Gilberto Gil during his tenure in public administration in Salvador. Later in life, he returned directly to his musical roots, releasing collaborative projects such as the 2020 album Suave Distopia with Jorge Alfredo.

Despite his primary global recognition as a mastermind behind major presidential campaigns across Latin America and Angola, Santana's creative output remains deeply intertwined with Brazilian rock and MPB history.
