Biography

Jocy de Oliveira is a distinguished Brazilian composer, pianist, and writer, born in Curitiba, Paraná. She pursued her musical education under the guidance of renowned instructors, studying piano with José Kliass in São Paulo and Marguerite Long in Paris, and later earned a Master of Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Her illustrious career encompasses prominent contributions to contemporary classical music and opera, including notable collaborations such as her partnership with Luciano Berio on the theatrical piece "Apague meu Spotlight".

In addition to her extensive compositional work—which includes acclaimed operas like "Berio sem Censura" and "Liquid Voices: A História de Mathilda Segalescu"—she holds a significant position within Brazil's cultural institutions. She succeeded maestro Eleazar de Carvalho, to whom she was previously married, to occupy Chair No. 32 at the Academia Brasileira de Música. Her avant-garde artistic vision bridges classical traditions with innovative theatrical elements, much like the experimental approaches seen in works by fellow Brazilian luminaries such as Gilberto Mendes and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
