Biography

Joracy Schafflor Camargo was a prominent Brazilian playwright, journalist, chronicler, and professor born in Rio de Janeiro. He began his artistic journey at the age of fourteen as an amateur actor before establishing himself as a major theatrical author. Working alongside cultural figures such as Álvaro Moreira in the Teatro de Brinquedo, Camargo became a pioneering voice in Brazilian drama by addressing working-class issues and social themes.

His career reached unprecedented heights with the 1933 masterpiece Deus lhe pague, staged by the renowned actor Procópio Ferreira. The play became the greatest success of Brazilian theater in the first half of the 20th century, achieving immense international acclaim and being translated into numerous languages, including Spanish, Polish, Hebrew, and Japanese. Throughout his prolific career, Camargo contributed significantly to popular music as a lyricist and was eventually elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras in 1967.
