Biography

Jorge Gonçalves was a Brazilian trumpeter, composer and instrumentalist who was active in the 1950s. Born in Rio de Janeiro around 1930, he left his mark on Brazilian popular music with recordings and compositions that explored genres such as choro and bolero.

His recording career includes the release of five records with the Todamérica label between 1952 and 1955. In these recordings, Gonçalves presented his original choros to the public, such as "Meu trompete" and "Nininha", as well as compositions in other rhythms, such as the bolero "Déa" and the mambo "Mambo negro". His sextet was the vehicle for the recording of many of these works, demonstrating his versatility as a musician and group leader.

Although his main activity was concentrated in the 50s, Jorge Gonçalves' work continued to be recognized. In 1996, his compositions "Quase" and "Defesa", both in partnership with Mirabeau (and Vital de Oliveira on "Defesa"), were re-recorded by Carmen Costa on her CD "Tantos caminhos". This demonstrates the enduring nature of his creations in Brazilian music.
