Biography

Antonio Jorge Portugal was born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, establishing himself throughout his career as a notable poet, lyricist, and composer, in addition to his renowned work as a Portuguese language teacher and television presenter. His national projection in music occurred in 1980, when he participated in the prestigious MPB Shell festival with the song "A massa," written in partnership with Raimundo Sodré and performed by him, winning third place in the competition and boosting the release of his first album.

Throughout his career as a composer, Portugal established partnerships of great artistic relevance with fundamental names in Brazilian music such as Roberto Mendes, Lazzo Matumbi, and Margareth Menezes. His works gained the voices of renowned MPB interpreters, such as Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Ivete Sangalo, Elba Ramalho, and Tânia Alves, enriching the Bahian and national songbook with refined compositions of strong cultural appeal.

In addition to his striking contribution to Brazilian popular music, Jorge Portugal stood out in education and communication, presenting the educational program Aprovado on Bahian television for several years and holding the position of Secretary of Culture of Bahia. He passed away in Salvador, in August 2020, leaving an indelible legacy in the culture and literature of the state and the country.
