Biography

José Brandão Tupinambá, widely known as Tupy, was a pivotal figure in the history of Brazilian country music and rodeo culture. Born in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, on December 15, 1927, Tupy became one of the 32 founders of the Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro (Rodeo Festival) in 1956. His involvement was instrumental in transforming the event into one of the largest and most significant in Brazil.

Beyond his role as a founder, Tupy also served as the president of the association "Os Independentes" from 1963 to 1964. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen the organization and solidify the festival's foundation. His dedication and vision were crucial in establishing the Festa do Peão de Barretos as a major cultural and sporting event, recognized across Latin America.

In recognition of his immense contributions, Tupy received the title of honorary citizen of Barretos in 2025, the same year the festival celebrated its 70th anniversary. A space within the Parque do Peão was also named in his honor, cementing his legacy. Tupy passed away on May 3, 2026, at the age of 98, leaving behind a profound impact on Brazilian rural traditions and music.
