Biography

Jota Moraes, born João do Amor Divino Moraes Pontes in Caçapava, São Paulo, is a renowned Brazilian pianist, arranger, and composer. His musical journey began in childhood when he was inspired by his older brother, initially learning the drums before mastering the vibrafone and piano. He launched his professional career at the tender age of 12, eventually performing in bars across São Paulo and contributing extensively to the Projeto Saci in the 1970s.

Throughout his prolific career, Moraes has worked alongside numerous icons of Brazilian popular music, including Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, and Gal Costa. He notably served as the musical director and producer for Gonzaguinha for over a decade. His versatility allowed him to blend jazz, bossa nova, tango, and bolero into various genres, most notably shaping hundreds of hits within the pagode genre.

In addition to his collaborative work, Moraes has built a strong reputation as a solo artist and band member, joining the legendary group Azymuth in 1989 and participating in the instrumental ensemble Cama de Gato. His artistic excellence earned him a Latin Grammy nomination in 2006 for Best Classical Album for Tempo Caboclo, a collaborative project with Mauro Senise. His enduring influence spans from rock to traditional Brazilian styles, cementing his legacy in the nation's musical history.
