Biography

Julie Joy, born Beatriz da Silva Araújo, was a celebrated Brazilian singer, actress, and television host who emerged in the mid-1950s. She initially gained recognition for interpreting songs in English before releasing her debut record in 1956 through the Sinter label, featuring the fox "Verão em Veneza" and the samba "Finge gostar". During this prolific era, she became a contracted artist at Rádio Nacional and frequently performed on TV Tupi, showcasing a versatile vocal style that spanned various genres like boleros, fox-trots, and sambas.

As her career flourished, she recorded with prominent orchestras and released music under the Columbia label, eventually achieving the prestigious title of "Rainha do Rádio" (Queen of the Radio) in 1958 as the final singer to receive this honor. Her success also extended to the silver screen, where she appeared in films such as "E o Bicho Não Deu" and "O Camelô da Rua Larga". Throughout her musical journey, she crossed paths with notable figures of Brazilian culture, maintaining a relationship with composer and musician João Roberto Kelly, with whom she had a daughter.

Following a steady stream of recordings and performances into the early 1960s, Julie Joy eventually stepped away from the spotlight, retiring from artistic life by the end of the decade. Her later years were marked by personal tragedy, including a devastating family incident in 1997 involving her eldest daughter. She lived quietly in her hometown until her passing in April 2011 at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy as one of the quintessential voices of Brazil's golden radio age alongside contemporaries like Emilinha Borba and Marlene.
