Biography

Jurema Costa, known mononymously as Jurema, is a Brazilian singer and songwriter, primarily recognized for her contributions to samba and MPB.

Born in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Jurema's musical journey began in her youth. She started her career performing on local radio programs and in nightclubs before moving to Rio de Janeiro to pursue broader opportunities. Her marriage to choro musician Waldir Cassiporé, who had collaborated with notable artists like Waldir Azevedo and Jacob do Bandolim, further immersed her in the vibrant music scene.

Jurema's recording career gained momentum in the late 1970s. Her 1978 debut LP, "O Samba Não Pode Parar," released by EMI-Odeon, featured a stellar lineup of musicians including Wilson das Neves, Marçal, Sivuca, and her husband Waldir Cassiporé. The album included the title track, co-written by Jurema, Tita, and J. das Neves, and other notable songs. She continued to release albums throughout the early 1980s, such as "Eu Nasci no Samba" (1979) and "Sinal de Paz" (1980), further solidifying her presence in Brazilian popular music.
