Biography

Karlos Rotsen is a Martinican pianist and producer who has established himself in the European music scene, particularly in Paris and Lisbon. His musical journey began in his teenage years in Fort-de-France, Martinique, where he accompanied his church choir and discovered the profound influence of African-American gospel music. This early exposure to gospel laid the foundation for his future musical explorations. He later pursued formal music studies at the Instituto Superior de la Habana in Cuba, where he was mentored by Andrés Alen. During his six years in Cuba, Rotsen was immersed in a rich environment of rumba, classical music, and jazz, collaborating with prominent Latin-jazz musicians like Irakere, Roberto Fonseca, and Irving Acao. It was during this formative period that he began composing his own music.

Upon returning to Martinique, Karlos Rotsen joined the folk music group Tambou bo Kannal, further broadening his musical palette. He then relocated to Paris, a move that led to the recording of his debut album, "Bon-Air," which showcased his signature Caribbean jazz sound. Rotsen presented this work at various jazz festivals across France, Colombia, Guyana, and Morocco. He also collaborated with other artists, including Gael Faye, a well-known figure in the French hip-hop scene. His work often blends jazz with Caribbean influences, creating a unique and vibrant sound.

Currently based in Lisbon, Karlos Rotsen continues to be an active force in the music industry. He has collaborated with Portuguese artists such as Sara Tavares and Fred (Orelha Negra). Alongside his associates, he co-founded "The Sailors," a label dedicated to the production of urban music. Despite his diverse projects, Rotsen maintains a strong connection to his roots by performing live with his Caribbean jazz trio. His career is marked by a continuous exploration of musical genres and a commitment to artistic collaboration, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and influential musician.
