Biography
Kátia Garcia Oliveira, known artistically as Kátia, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1962. Born prematurely, she lost her sight due to complications from childbirth, but from childhood she showed a strong inclination for music, encouraged by her grandfather, a pianist, and receiving her first piano at four years of age. In her teens, she began composing and had her songs heard by the singer Roberto Carlos, a friend of her father, who became her artistic godfather and recommended her to the CBS record label.
In the 1980s, Kátia achieved enormous national prominence, scoring tremendous hits such as the track "Lembranças", which surpassed one million copies sold, and striking songs like "Cedo Pra Mim" and "Qualquer Jeito", the latter written by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos. Her romantic style and distinctive voice earned her gold, platinum, and diamond records, in addition to significant international projection in the 1990s with albums released in Spanish that appeared on the Latin Billboard charts. Throughout her career, she collaborated with several major names in Brazilian music, such as José Augusto, Leonardo Sullivan, and the duo Tiãozinho & Alessandro.
In addition to her trajectory of great commercial success in MPB and romantic music, Kátia also dedicated an expressive part of her adult life to social causes, standing out in the support and defense of the rights of visually impaired people through accessibility software. Her artistic and humanitarian contribution consolidated her name as one of Brazil's great romantic interpreters.
