Biography
Kid Abelha emerged in Rio de Janeiro in 1981, the result of a meeting between vocalist Paula Toller and bassist Leoni in the hallways of PUC-Rio. Initially named Kid Abelha e os Abóboras Selvagens, the group solidified its initial lineup with George Israel on saxophone and Bruno Fortunato on guitar, becoming one of the central figures of the 1980s Rock Brasil movement. Their early performances at Circo Voador and the success of singles like 'Pintura Íntima' and 'Como Eu Quero' catapulted the band to national stardom, culminating in a historic performance at the first Rock in Rio in 1985.
Leoni's turbulent departure in 1986, following disagreements that also involved Herbert Vianna, marked an important transition for the band. Under the leadership of the trio Toller, Israel, and Fortunato, Kid Abelha simplified its name and refined its sound, transitioning from youthful pop rock to a more mature and sophisticated pop. Throughout the 90s, the group remained relevant with hits like 'Grand' Hotel' and notable covers of artists such as Hyldon and Mutantes, demonstrating a rare longevity among their generational peers.
In the early 2000s, the Acústico MTV project reaffirmed the power of the band's repertoire, selling over a million copies and introducing classics to a new audience. After hiatuses dedicated to solo projects and an official breakup announced in 2013, Kid Abelha surprised the public in 2026 by announcing their return to the stage for a commemorative tour. The group's trajectory is marked by constant collaboration with major names in Brazilian music, including partnerships with Cazuza and Lulu Santos, cementing Paula Toller as one of the most iconic voices in national pop.
