Biography

Lailson de Holanda Cavalcanti, born in Recife on December 26, 1952 and passed away in the same city on October 26, 2021, stood out on the Brazilian cultural scene as a cartoonist, editorial cartoonist, illustrator, advertiser, journalist, and musician. In addition to his prolific career in the graphic arts and humor — with cartoons published daily for 27 years in Diario de Pernambuco and in major international media outlets — Lailson made a remarkable foray into Brazilian music in the early 1970s.

Alongside Lula Côrtes, Lailson led the Pernambucan musical movement of the era and released the acclaimed album Satwa. Recorded in 1973, this work went down in history for being Brazil's first independent LP, later establishing itself as a worldwide benchmark of psychedelic folk and being re-released internationally decades later.

In addition to his musical contribution alongside key figures of the Northeastern avant-garde, Lailson dedicated much of his life to research, curation, and the promotion of graphic humor and comics in the country. He passed away in 2021, leaving an invaluable legacy in Pernambucan and Brazilian culture, spanning from experimental music to literature adapted into comic books.
