Biography
Lana Bittencourt, born Irlan Figueiredo Passos, was a prominent Brazilian singer and actress whose career spanned several decades. Encouraged by her family, particularly her paternal father who was a poet and composer and her Italian grandmother, she began studying lyrical singing at an early age. Before fully committing to music, she studied philosophy and literature, eventually gaining initial recognition through a jingle composed by her father which led to early radio and television appearances in Fortaleza and Recife. Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro, she became a prominent nightclub singer at the Copacabana Palace before securing contracts with major radio stations like Rádio Mayrink Veiga.
Throughout the 1950s, Bittencourt achieved widespread fame with hits such as Tom Jobim's "Se todos fossem iguais a você" and her massively successful 1957 recording of "Little Darlin'". Signed to Columbia Records, she earned the moniker "A Internacional" due to her versatility in performing international hits alongside Brazilian standards, as well as being known as the "Diva Passional" for her deeply emotional vocal deliveries. In addition to her thriving recording career, she starred in classic Brazilian films alongside Mazzaropi and hosted her own radio programs, maintaining a beloved presence in the national entertainment scene.
After taking a hiatus in the late 1960s to raise her children, she returned to performing in the late 1970s and continued sharing her musical talents well into her later years, including streaming live performances during the pandemic with her husband, guitarist Mirabeaux. Lana Bittencourt passed away in Petrópolis in 2023, leaving behind a rich legacy as a versatile interpreter of both Brazilian popular music and international numbers. Her artistic journey intertwined with contemporaries and legends of her era, cementing her place in the history of Brazilian radio, film, and song.
