Biography

Léa Freire is a prominent flutist, arranger, and composer born in São Paulo. At sixteen, she entered the Centro Livre de Aprendizagem Musical (Clam), where she studied piano, acoustic guitar, and flute, establishing contact with important instrumentalists of the Brazilian instrumental scene. After a period away from her artistic career to work in financial administration, she resumed her musical path with full force by founding her own record label, Maritaca, in the late 1990s.

In her discography, she debuted with the acclaimed self-authored album Ninhal (1997), produced in partnership with singer and acoustic guitarist Joyce and featuring the Banda Mantiqueira. Throughout her career, she has consolidated fruitful partnerships with prominent names in instrumental and popular music, touring international stages such as the famous Blue Note club in New York. Her work also encompasses reinterpretations and the appreciation of the national repertoire, exemplified by the albums Antologia da Canção Brasileira, recorded in partnership with trombonist Bocato.

Her contribution to Brazilian music extends to the preservation and diffusion of contemporary instrumental music, standing out for the inventiveness of her arrangements and compositions. Alongside artists like Teco Cardoso and Nico Assumpção, Léa has built a sophisticated body of work that dialogues with the roots of choro and Brazilian jazz. The aesthetic rigor of her productions has established her name as one of the leading instrumentalists of her generation in the country.
