Biography
Osvaldo Lenine Macedo Pimentel, known professionally as Lenine, is a highly acclaimed Brazilian singer-songwriter, producer, and arranger, born on February 2, 1959, in Recife, Pernambuco. His music is characterized by a unique fusion of Brazilian popular music (MPB) with the vibrant rhythms of Northeast Brazil, blended with elements of rock, pop, and electronica. Lenine's career began in the early 1980s, and he released his first LP, "Baque Solto," in 1983 with partner Lula Queiroga. His second album, "Olho de Peixe," released a decade later with percussionist Marcos Suzano, solidified his importance in the 1990s Brazilian music scene for merging traditional genres with pop.
Lenine's solo career took off with his 1997 album "O Dia em que Faremos Contato," which featured a pop structure incorporating electronica, northeastern rhythms, and samba. He has since released numerous successful albums, earning critical acclaim and multiple awards, including seven Latin Grammy Awards between 2002 and 2018. In 2005, he notably won two Latin Grammys for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album and Best Brazilian Song. His compositions have been recorded by a wide range of Brazilian artists, including Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, and Daniela Mercury.
Beyond his musical achievements, Lenine is known for his thoughtful lyrics that often address themes of love, sorrow, and social justice. He has collaborated with international artists such as Living Colour and Victor Astorga, and his music has been featured in film and television.
