Biography
Lennie Dale, born Leonardo La Ponzina in Brooklyn, New York, was an Italian-American dancer, choreographer, actor, and singer who made Brazil his artistic home. Before moving to Brazil, he built an impressive international career, performing in the Broadway production of West Side Story, dancing in Europe, and contributing to major film projects such as Cleopatra. His arrival in Rio de Janeiro in 1960, brought by theatrical director Carlos Machado, marked the beginning of his deep integration into the Brazilian cultural landscape.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Lennie Dale became a central figure in the vibrant urban music scene of Rio de Janeiro, closely associating with the founders of bossa nova. He directed numerous legendary shows at the famous Beco das Garrafas, a bohemian hub for bossa nova musicians, and recorded notable collaborative albums with groups like Bossa Três and Sambalanço Trio. His artistic vision significantly shaped the choreography and stage presence of the era's musical performances.
In 1973, amidst the military dictatorship in Brazil, Dale founded Dzi Croquettes, an iconic, groundbreaking and gender-bending troupe that blended dance and theater with irreverent humor, becoming a lasting symbol of the period's counterculture. Although he continued to travel and direct shows internationally, including work with Liza Minnelli in the United States, his legacy remains profoundly rooted in Brazilian popular music and performance art. He passed away in New York in 1994 due to complications from AIDS.
